How to convert time to decimal
An hour has 60 minutes and 3,600 seconds, so divide each part by the number of those units in an hour and add them up.
Decimal hours = H + M ÷ 60 + S ÷ 3,600 · Decimal minutes = H × 60 + M + S ÷ 60
To go back, take the whole hours, multiply the remaining fraction by 60 for minutes, and multiply that remaining fraction by 60 again for seconds.
Worked examples
2 h 45 min → decimal: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so the answer is 2.75 hours, or 165 minutes.
7.8 h → h:m:s: 7 whole hours; 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes; no fraction left, so 7 h 48 min 0 s.

Decimal minutes and seconds
The same idea works one level down: seconds divided by 60 give decimal minutes. Race results and lap times sometimes appear as 3.5 minutes, which is 3 minutes 30 seconds. Industrial time clocks often record hundredths of an hour, so 0.01 h is exactly 36 seconds and a full 1.00 h is 60 minutes.
Tips
- Payroll: multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate – never the h:mm figure. 7:45 at $20/h is 7.75 × 20 = $155, not $149.
- Spreadsheets store times as fractions of a day; multiply a time cell by 24 to get decimal hours.
- Rounding: round only the final total, not each day, to avoid small payroll errors adding up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.5 h, 45 minutes = 0.75 h and 20 minutes ≈ 0.333 h.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.8 hours → 0.8 × 60 = 48, so 7 hours 48 minutes.
Why is 1.5 hours not 1 hour 50 minutes?
Decimal hours are fractions of 60 minutes, not 100. Half an hour is 0.5, so 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes.
How many decimal places should I use on a timesheet?
Two decimal places (hundredths of an hour, 36 seconds) is standard for payroll. Some employers round to tenths (6 minutes) or quarters (15 minutes).
