How the countdown is calculated

Both dates are converted to day numbers and subtracted, giving the number of days still to go. Weeks are that total divided by 7, and months are stepped forward on the calendar from today.

Days left = day number(event) − day number(today)  ·  Hours = days × 24

Worked example

On Sunday, October 11, 2026 there are 20 days left in October, 30 in November and 25 more to reach December 25 – 75 days until Christmas, which is 10 weeks and 5 days, 2 months and 14 days, or 1,800 hours.

Days, weeks or months?

Short countdowns read best in days, while longer ones are easier to picture in weeks or months. The calculator shows all three side by side. Total hours are simply the days multiplied by 24, measured from midnight to midnight, so they ignore the time you are reading the page and any daylight-saving change. If you need a live clock down to the second, use the hours figure as a guide and subtract the hours already gone today. Because every date is handled as a plain calendar day, the result is the same wherever you are in the world.

Tips

  • Moving holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving or Diwali change date every year – choose "Custom date" and enter this year's date.
  • Planning: the weekdays figure tells you how many working days remain before a deadline or trip.
  • Kids' countdowns: the "sleeps" number is the number of nights to go.

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown include today?

No. It counts the number of midnights between today and the event – the number of "sleeps" – so the day before Christmas shows 1 day and Christmas Day itself shows "Today".

What happens after the event has passed this year?

For the built-in holidays the countdown rolls over to next year automatically. For a custom date in the past, the calculator shows how many days have passed since it.

Can I count down to my own event?

Yes. Choose "Custom date", pick the date and optionally give it a name such as a wedding, holiday or exam. Under the advanced options you can also count from a date other than today.

Why can the months figure look uneven?

Months have 28 to 31 days, so "2 months and 14 days" is measured on the calendar from today, not as a fixed 30-day block. The total days figure is always exact.
