⏱️ Overtime Calculator

Work out your overtime rate and total gross pay for a week of regular and overtime hours.

Quick answer: Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. For example, at $20 an hour, 10 hours at time and a half ($30.00) is $300.00; added to 40 regular hours ($800.00), total pay is $1,100.00.

How to calculate overtime pay

Overtime is paid at a premium over your normal hourly rate for hours worked beyond a set limit – most often 40 hours a week. Calculate regular and overtime hours separately, then add them together.

Overtime rate = Hourly rate × Multiplier  ·  Total pay = Regular hours × Rate + Overtime hours × Overtime rate

Example: $20/hour, 40 regular hours and 10 overtime hours at time and a half → regular pay $800.00, overtime rate $30.00, overtime pay $300.00, total $1,100.00.

Common overtime multipliers

MultiplierNameTypical use
1.5×Time and a halfHours over 40 a week (US federal minimum)
2×Double timeHolidays, Sundays, very long shifts in some states or contracts
1.25×Time and a quarterSome union and international agreements

Rules worth knowing

  • US federal law counts overtime by the workweek; hours cannot be averaged across two weeks.
  • The “regular rate” can include non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials, which raises the overtime rate.
  • Outside the US, overtime is often set by contract or collective agreement rather than law. In the UK, for example, there is no statutory overtime premium, but average pay must not fall below the minimum wage.

Tips

  • Keep your own record of hours worked to check your payslip.
  • Overtime can push part of your pay into a higher tax bracket, but only the extra income is taxed at the higher rate.
  • Compare the extra pay against fatigue and time costs before volunteering for long stretches.

Frequently asked questions

What is time and a half?

It is 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. If you earn $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour.

When does overtime start in the US?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must receive at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12.

Is overtime calculated on gross or net pay?

Overtime is calculated on your gross (pre-tax) hourly rate. Tax and other deductions are then taken from the total gross pay.

Do salaried employees get overtime?

It depends on whether the role is exempt. In the US, salaried workers below the federal salary threshold, or whose duties do not meet the exemption tests, are still owed overtime.
