The Umm al-Qura calendar (rules as of 2026)

The Islamic calendar is lunar: each month starts with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar fixes the start of each month astronomically (month begins if the moon sets after the sun on the 29th, as seen from Makkah) and is the official civil calendar for government, contracts and payroll in the Kingdom. Religious dates are still confirmed by moon sighting.

Worked example

11 October 2026 (a Sunday) is 30 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH. Converting back, 1 Ramadan 1448 falls on Monday, 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) on 9 March 2027 and Eid al-Adha (10 Dhu al-Hijjah) on 16 May 2027 – subject to the official moon sighting.

Tips

  • Saudi documents (Iqama, contracts, GOSI) often show Hijri dates – convert expiry dates here before renewing.
  • A Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, so a “1-year” contract in Hijri terms ends earlier than in Gregorian terms.

Frequently asked questions

Which Hijri calendar does this converter use?

The Umm al-Qura calendar – the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, published by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology and used by most GCC governments, banks and employers for official dates.

Why can Ramadan or Eid differ by a day from this converter?

Religious occasions are announced after a moon sighting (in Saudi Arabia by the Supreme Court, in the UAE by the Moon Sighting Committee). The sighting can differ from the astronomical Umm al-Qura calendar by a day, and some countries follow their own sighting.

How many days are in a Hijri year?

A Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days – 354 or 355 days in total – so Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

What is today’s Hijri date?

The quick answer at the top of this page always shows today’s date in the Umm al-Qura calendar, updated each day.

What date range is supported?

Gregorian years 1902–2076 and Hijri years 1320–1499 AH – the period covered by the published Umm al-Qura tables.
