How business days are counted

A business day is any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Every full week in a range contributes exactly 5 of them, so the calculator counts the full weeks first and then checks the few leftover days one by one.

Business days = 5 × full weeks + weekdays among the remaining 0–6 days

Worked example

January 1–31, 2026: 31 days is 4 full weeks (20 business days) plus 3 extra days. January 1, 2026 is a Thursday, so the leftover days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday – 2 more weekdays. Total: 22 business days and 9 weekend days.

Adding 10 business days to Thursday, January 1, 2026: Friday the 2nd is day 1, Monday 5th to Friday 9th are days 2–6, and Monday 12th to Thursday 15th are days 7–10, giving Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Business days vs. calendar days

Contracts, banks and couriers often quote periods in business days because nothing is processed at weekends. A rough rule is that 5 business days equal one calendar week and 20 business days are a little under a month, but the exact figure depends on which weekday the period starts, which is why counting date by date matters.

Tips

  • Shipping and processing times ("5–7 business days") start counting the day after the order.
  • Holidays: add one business day to a deadline for each weekday holiday that falls inside the period.
  • Payroll: multiply business days by daily hours to estimate working hours for the period.

Frequently asked questions

Are the start and end dates counted?

Yes. When counting between two dates both are included, so a single Monday counts as 1 business day and Monday to Friday of the same week counts as 5.

How does adding business days work?

The start date itself is not counted. Each following Monday–Friday counts as one business day and weekends are skipped, so 1 business day after a Friday is the next Monday.

Does it skip public holidays?

No – holidays differ by country, state and company. Subtract any weekday holidays in your range from the result, or add one extra business day for each holiday when finding a deadline.

How many business days are in a year?

Most years have 260 or 261 weekdays (262 in a leap year that starts on a Monday, like 2024). After about 10 public holidays, a typical full-time year has roughly 250 working days.
