Frequently asked questions
How do I compare a tax-free salary with a salary back home?
Convert the Gulf salary into the home currency, then find the gross salary whose take-home pay after income tax and social contributions equals that amount. The calculator does this exactly by searching for the gross salary that gives the same net pay.
Is my Gulf salary really tax-free?
The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman do not tax employment income. Nationals pay social-insurance contributions, but most expats pay nothing from their salary (Saudi employers pay 2% GOSI hazard insurance for expats).
Do Americans pay US tax on a Dubai salary?
US citizens are taxed on worldwide income, but the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion lets qualifying expats exclude up to $132,900 (2026) of salary, plus a housing exclusion. Above that, US tax applies – this calculator compares with living and working in the US.
Which exchange rate is used?
AED, SAR, QAR, BHD and OMR are pegged to the US dollar, so their official peg is used for dollar comparisons. Other pairs use today’s live market rate (with an approximate fallback if it is unavailable).
What about state and provincial taxes?
US states with no income tax or a flat tax are applied automatically. For states with progressive brackets and for Canadian provinces, enter your approximate effective rate to include it.
