How shoe size systems compare
The UK and US systems count in barleycorns (⅓ inch) from a starting point, the EU system counts Paris points (⅔ cm), and Japan/Mondopoint uses the foot length directly. Because the steps differ, conversions are approximate and are usually rounded to the nearest half size.

Worked example
For a US men's 9: women's 9 + 1.5 = 10.5; UK 9 − 0.5 = 8.5; EU 4⁄3 × 8.5 + 31⅓ = 42.67, rounded to 42.5; Japan 9 + 18 = 27 cm.
Remember that UK and EU sizes are unisex, while the US uses separate men's and women's scales – the most common source of mistakes when ordering from overseas shops.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert women's shoe sizes to men's?
Subtract 1.5 from the US women's size to get the US men's size – a women's 8 is roughly a men's 6.5. UK and EU sizes are the same scale for men and women.
How do EU shoe sizes work?
EU sizes use the Paris point, which is ⅔ cm of shoe length. Each full EU size is 6.67 mm longer, so the step between EU sizes is smaller than between UK or US sizes.
Why do brands give different conversions?
There is no single international standard: each brand uses its own lasts and rounding. Our chart follows common Brannock-based conventions and is accurate to about half a size.
What is Mondopoint?
Mondopoint (ISO 9407) is the foot length in millimetres, used for ski boots and in Japan as cm sizes. It is the most precise system because it measures the foot, not the shoe.
