How numbers are spelled out
English groups digits in threes. Each group from 1 to 999 is read on its own and followed by its scale word – thousand, million, billion, trillion. Groups that are zero are skipped.
1,234,567 → one million · two hundred thirty-four thousand · five hundred sixty-seven
Writing an amount on a check
Banks expect the whole-currency amount in words followed by the cents as a fraction of 100. Example: $1,234.45 becomes One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 45/100 dollars. A round $500 is written Five hundred and 00/100 dollars.
International vs Indian numbering
| Number | International | Indian |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 | one hundred thousand | one lakh (1,00,000) |
| 1,000,000 | one million | ten lakh (10,00,000) |
| 10,000,000 | ten million | one crore (1,00,00,000) |
| 1,000,000,000 | one billion | one hundred crore |
In the Indian system the first three digits form a group, after which digits are grouped in pairs – so lakh and crore appear where the international system would use hundred thousand and ten million.
Tips for writing numbers in words
- Hyphenate twenty-one to ninety-nine (forty-five, ninety-nine).
- US style leaves out "and" inside whole numbers; save it for the decimal point.
- On legal documents write the amount in words followed by the figures in brackets, e.g. "two thousand (2,000) dollars".
- Start a sentence with the number in words, not digits.
Common mistakes on checks
- Leaving a gap before the amount – start writing at the far left of the line.
- Making the words and the figures disagree. If they differ, banks normally treat the amount in words as the legal amount.
- Forgetting the cents: always write a fraction, even "00/100", so the line cannot be altered.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write cents on a check?
Write the dollar amount in words, then "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100 – for example "Fifty-two and 07/100 dollars". Draw a line through any unused space so nobody can add to it.
Should I use "and" in numbers like one hundred and five?
In US style, "and" is reserved for the decimal point, so 105 is "one hundred five". British English usually says "one hundred and five". Both are understood.
What are lakh and crore?
They are Indian numbering units: one lakh is 100,000 (written 1,00,000) and one crore is 10 million (1,00,00,000). Choose the Indian system above to use them.
Are hyphens needed in numbers like forty-five?
Yes. Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated in standard English, which is how this converter writes them.
