How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people if you're splitting.

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100  ·  Total = Bill + Tip  ·  Each = Total ÷ People

Example: an $84 bill with an 18% tip → tip $15.12, total $99.12, or $49.56 each for two people.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 20% or more for excellent service. Many other countries expect less, or include a service charge on the bill.

How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?

Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10%, then double it. For a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total is common and simpler. The difference is usually small.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Enter the number of people above and the calculator does it for you.
