🏎️ Speed Distance Time

Enter any two of speed, distance and time to find the third – in kilometers or miles, km/h or mph.

Quick answer: Speed = distance ÷ time. Covering 150 km in 2 hours 30 minutes is 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60 km/h (37.28 mph).

Working

  1. Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  2. Time = 2 h + 30 min = 2.5 h
  3. Speed = 150 km ÷ 2.5 h = 60 km/h

The speed, distance and time formulas

Speed tells you how much distance is covered per unit of time. Rearranging the same relationship lets you solve for any one of the three quantities when you know the other two.

Speed = Distance ÷ Time  ·  Distance = Speed × Time  ·  Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Worked examples

  • Speed: 150 km in 2 h 30 min → 150 ÷ 2.5 = 60 km/h (37.28 mph).
  • Distance: 65 mph for 3 h → 65 × 3 = 195 miles.
  • Time: 240 km at 80 km/h → 240 ÷ 80 = 3 hours.

Keep the units consistent

Use kilometers with km/h and miles with mph, and convert minutes to decimal hours before dividing. The calculator does this automatically – mixing kilometers with mph is fine, as it converts the speed first and shows the step.

Average speed

Average speed is total distance divided by total time – not the average of the speeds. Driving 60 km at 60 km/h and another 60 km at 30 km/h takes 1 h + 2 h = 3 h for 120 km, an average of 40 km/h, not 45.

Tips

  • For trip planning, add 10–20% to driving time for stops and traffic.
  • Runners often think in pace (minutes per km or mile) – pace is simply time ÷ distance.

Pilots and sailors use knots (nautical miles per hour); one knot is about 1.15 mph or 1.85 km/h, so convert before using this calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for speed, distance and time?

Speed = distance ÷ time, distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed. Cover the one you want in the classic triangle and the other two show how to combine them.

How do I convert minutes into hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes is 0.5 h and 45 minutes is 0.75 h, so 2 h 45 min is 2.75 hours.

How long does it take to drive 100 miles at 60 mph?

100 ÷ 60 = 1.667 hours, which is 1 hour 40 minutes. Real journeys take longer because of traffic, stops and slower roads.

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Divide km/h by 1.609344 (or multiply by about 0.621). 100 km/h is about 62.14 mph; 60 mph is about 96.56 km/h.
