📏 Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator
Measure your waist and hips, pick your sex and get your waist-to-hip ratio, compared with the WHO abdominal-obesity cut-offs of 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women.
Quick answer: WHR = waist ÷ hips. A man with an 86 cm waist and 100 cm hips has a WHR of 0.86, below the WHO threshold of 0.90, so he is in the lower-risk range.

How to calculate waist-to-hip ratio
Divide your waist circumference by your hip circumference. Both must use the same unit, so the result is a plain ratio.
WHR = Waist circumference ÷ Hip circumference
Example: waist 86 cm ÷ hips 100 cm = 0.86. For a man this is below 0.90, so it is considered lower risk.
WHO risk thresholds
| Sex | Lower risk | Higher risk |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Below 0.90 | 0.90 or more |
| Women | Below 0.85 | 0.85 or more |
The NIH also flags a waist over 102 cm (40 in) for men or 88 cm (35 in) for women, regardless of hip size.
Measuring tips
- Measure against bare skin or thin clothing.
- Take the waist after a normal exhale, without sucking in.
- Measure twice and use the average.
- Track it over time rather than reading too much into one number.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
The WHO defines abdominal obesity as a ratio of 0.90 or more for men and 0.85 or more for women. Lower values indicate lower cardiovascular and metabolic risk.
How do I measure my waist and hips?
Stand relaxed and measure your waist at its narrowest point (or at the navel), after breathing out. Measure hips around the widest part of your buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
Is WHR better than BMI?
WHR looks at fat distribution, which BMI ignores, and belly fat is linked to higher health risk. Using both together gives a fuller picture.
Does it work for everyone?
It is a screening tool for adults. Thresholds can differ by ethnicity and age, and it is not a diagnosis, so discuss concerns with a doctor.
