How to use the TFSA calculator
Enter the year you turned 18 or became a Canadian resident, the total you have ever contributed and any withdrawals made before 2026. Then add your current balance, a yearly contribution, a time horizon and a return to see how the account grows.
TFSA annual limits 2009–2026
| Years | Annual limit |
|---|---|
| 2009–2012 | $5,000 |
| 2013–2014 | $5,500 |
| 2015 | $10,000 |
| 2016–2018 | $5,500 |
| 2019–2022 | $6,000 |
| 2023 | $6,500 |
| 2024–2026 | $7,000 |
| Total since 2009 | $109,000 |
Room = sum of annual limits since eligible − contributions + withdrawals from previous years
Worked example
Eligible since 2009: $109,000 of limits. Contributions of $60,000 and a $5,000 withdrawal in 2025 leave $54,000 of room for 2026. Investing $7,000 a year on top of a $70,000 balance at 6% grows to about $482,000 in 20 years – all of it tax-free.

Frequently asked questions
What is the TFSA limit for 2026?
The 2026 annual TFSA dollar limit is $7,000, the same as in 2024 and 2025. Someone who has been 18 or older and resident in Canada since 2009 and never contributed has $109,000 of room.
When does my TFSA room start?
Room starts accumulating in the year you turn 18 (or 2009, when TFSAs began, if later) – as long as you are a Canadian resident with a SIN. Years spent as a non-resident don’t add room.
Do withdrawals give me room back?
Yes, but not until 1 January of the following year. Re-contributing money you withdrew earlier in the same year, without enough unused room, causes an over-contribution.
What is the penalty for over-contributing?
The CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount in each month until it is withdrawn or absorbed by new room.
Does investment growth use up room?
No. Interest, dividends and capital gains inside a TFSA don’t affect your room, and when you withdraw them, they are added to your room the next year.
