Why there is no single “tax-free premium”
Recruiters often say a Gulf salary is “worth 30% more” than the same figure at home. The real gap depends on three things: how much you earn, where you would otherwise live, and the exchange rate. Income tax is progressive, so the higher the salary, the larger the share a Western payslip loses – and the more gross pay you need to stand still.
This calculator does not apply a rule of thumb. It converts your Gulf package into dollars, pounds or Canadian dollars, then searches for the exact gross salary whose take-home pay – after income tax and the employee’s social contributions – equals that amount, and itemises every deduction.
Gulf net per year = monthly package × 12 (− 1% SIO in Bahrain) · Target net = Gulf net × exchange rate · Find gross G such that G − tax(G) − contributions(G) = target net · Extra needed = G ÷ target net − 1
What the Gulf does – and doesn’t – take from a salary
- UAE. No personal income tax. The 9% Corporate Tax does not reach employees: Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023 states that a wage earned under an employment contract is not business activity, whatever the amount.
- Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait. No tax on employment income and no social-insurance deduction from an expatriate’s pay. In Saudi Arabia the employer pays 2% GOSI occupational-hazard insurance for expats; it is not taken from your salary.
- Bahrain. Every private-sector employee, expatriate or Bahraini, pays 1% unemployment insurance to the Social Insurance Organization on wages up to BHD 4,000 a month. The calculator compares the salary after this deduction.
- Oman. Royal Decree No. 56/2025 introduces a 5% personal income tax from 1 January 2028 on individuals with income above OMR 42,000 a year. Salaries are untaxed until then, and most expatriate salaries stay below the threshold.
Worked examples
AED 25,000 a month in Dubai against Texas
AED 300,000 a year is $81,688 at the 3.6725 peg. The gross salary that leaves exactly that in Texas is $103,565:
- Federal income tax on $87,465 ($103,565 − $16,100 standard deduction): $13,954
- Social Security 6.2%: $6,421 · Medicare 1.45%: $1,502
- Texas state income tax: $0 – take-home pay $81,688, so the offer is worth 26.8% more than its face value
Move the comparison to Illinois and the answer rises to $111,183: the state takes 4.95% of wages above its $2,925 exemption ($5,359), and the higher gross also pushes up federal tax and payroll taxes. The gap becomes 36.1%.
SAR 20,000 a month in Riyadh against England
SAR 240,000 a year converted at the rate on the day we checked (1 SAR = £0.2016) is about £48,374. To take home that in England you need £65,201 gross: income tax £13,513 (20% on the first £37,700 above the allowance, 40% on the rest) and National Insurance £3,315. That is 34.8% more – the pound conversion moves with the market, but the £48,374-net-to-£65,201-gross step does not.
BHD 2,000 a month in Manama against Florida
BHD 24,000 a year minus the 1% unemployment insurance (BHD 240) leaves BHD 23,760, or $63,191 at the 0.376 peg. In Florida, with no state income tax, you need $77,273 gross: federal tax $8,170, Social Security $4,791 and Medicare $1,120 – 22.3% more.
The gap grows with the salary (UAE vs US)
| Tax-free a month | Same in USD a year | Gross needed – Texas | Extra | Gross needed – Illinois | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AED 10,000 | $32,675 | $37,953 | 16.2% | $40,253 | 23.2% |
| AED 15,000 | $49,013 | $58,286 | 18.9% | $61,921 | 26.3% |
| AED 20,000 | $65,351 | $80,342 | 22.9% | $86,202 | 31.9% |
| AED 25,000 | $81,688 | $103,565 | 26.8% | $111,183 | 36.1% |
| AED 35,000 | $114,364 | $150,838 | 31.9% | $162,386 | 42.0% |
| AED 50,000 | $163,376 | $219,832 | 34.6% | $237,520 | 45.4% |
The same table works for a Saudi, Qatari, Bahraini or Omani salary of the same dollar value, because all five currencies are pegged. SAR 20,000 a month, for instance, is $64,000 a year and needs $78,422 in Texas.
The UK’s £100,000 trap
For a British expat, the comparison turns sharply at high salaries. Between £100,000 and £125,140 the personal allowance is withdrawn £1 for every £2 earned, so that slice of pay is taxed at an effective 60%, plus 2% National Insurance.
| Net pay you want in England | Gross salary needed | Extra |
|---|---|---|
| £30,000 | £36,778 | 22.6% |
| £50,000 | £68,004 | 36.0% |
| £75,000 | £116,954 | 55.9% |
| £100,000 | £166,441 | 66.4% |
| £125,000 | £213,611 | 70.9% |
Going from £100,000 to £125,140 gross adds £25,140 to your pay but only £9,553 to your take-home. That is why AED 50,000 a month – roughly £123,500 a year at October 2026 rates – needs about £210,757 in London.
Rules that change the answer
- US state. Texas, Florida, Nevada, Washington and five other states have no wage tax. Flat-tax states are applied after their own deduction (Illinois $2,925, Michigan $5,900, Massachusetts $4,400). For bracket states such as California or New York, enter your effective rate.
- Canadian province. The default shows federal tax, CPP/CPP2 and EI only. Add your province: QAR 30,000 a month against Ontario at an 8% effective rate needs about CAD 202,600 at October 2026 rates.
- Scotland. The UK result uses the rest-of-UK bands; Scottish rates of 19% to 48% make the gross needed higher at most middle and high salaries.
- Six-figure US salaries. Social Security stops at $184,500 of wages in 2026 ($192,300 in 2027), while the extra 0.9% Medicare starts above $200,000.
- US citizens. A citizen who stays in the Gulf files a US return but can exclude up to $132,900 of 2026 wages under the FEIE; this tool compares with moving back.
- Kuwaiti dinar. KWD is pegged to a basket, not the dollar, so even US comparisons move slightly with the market.
Common mistakes
- Comparing net with gross. Put the Gulf cash package against the gross offer at home – not against your current take-home pay.
- Treating employer costs as yours. Saudi GOSI hazard insurance, visa and work-permit fees and medical insurance are paid by the employer, not deducted from an expat’s salary.
- Converting at a card or exchange-house rate. For pegged currencies the official peg is the fair comparison; a 2% margin on the conversion skews the result by about 2%.
- Stopping at tax. Rent, school fees, health cover for dependants and flights home can absorb much of the saving, while a home pension and public health care have value the Gulf package does not include.
When to get help
If you hold US citizenship, own property or a business at home, or are timing a move around the tax year, speak to a tax adviser in your home country before signing – residence rules decide whether a Gulf salary is taxed there at all. For the full picture across 29 home countries, see our report on the gross pay needed to match a Gulf salary.
Estimates for general information, not tax advice. Single employee, no pension contributions, student loan or city taxes. US 2026, UK 2026/27 and Canada 2026 rules as of October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How much is AED 25,000 a month tax-free in US dollars before tax?
AED 300,000 a year is $81,688 at the 3.6725 peg. A single filer in Texas needs $103,565 gross to keep that after $13,954 federal income tax and $7,923 Social Security and Medicare; in Illinois, with 4.95% state tax, the figure is $111,183.
Is a tax-free salary worth 30% more?
Only at some salaries. Against Texas, AED 10,000 a month needs 16.2% more gross pay, AED 25,000 needs 26.8% and AED 50,000 needs 34.6%, because each extra dollar falls into a higher federal bracket. In the UK the gap reaches 66% once you need £100,000 net.
Do expats pay anything from their salary in the Gulf?
Not in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait or Oman. In Bahrain every private-sector employee pays 1% unemployment insurance to the SIO on wages up to BHD 4,000 a month, so BHD 2,000 a month loses BHD 240 a year – the calculator deducts it before comparing.
Do Americans pay US tax on a Dubai salary?
Yes, US citizens are taxed on worldwide income, but the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion lets a qualifying expat exclude up to $132,900 of 2026 salary, plus a housing amount. This calculator compares with living and working in the US, not with a US citizen staying abroad.
Why does the UK need so much more than the US at high salaries?
Between £100,000 and £125,140 the UK personal allowance is withdrawn £1 for every £2 earned, so that slice is taxed at an effective 60% plus 2% National Insurance. Taking home £100,000 needs £166,441 gross – 66.4% more – while £50,000 net needs £68,004.
Which exchange rate is used?
AED, SAR, QAR, BHD and OMR are pegged to the US dollar (3.6725, 3.75, 3.64, 0.376 and 0.3845 per dollar), so dollar comparisons use the peg and never move. Pounds, Canadian dollars and the Kuwaiti dinar, which is pegged to a basket, use the day’s market rate.
How are US state and Canadian provincial taxes handled?
States with no income tax or a flat tax are applied automatically, after their own deduction – Illinois taxes wages above $2,925 at 4.95%. For states with brackets and for Canadian provinces, enter your approximate effective rate; with 8% for Ontario, QAR 30,000 a month needs about CAD 202,600 at October 2026 rates.
Should I enter my basic salary or the full package?
The full monthly cash package – basic plus housing, transport and other fixed allowances – because that is what reaches your account. Leave out an unguaranteed bonus. Gratuity is worked out on basic pay only, so check it separately.
