What comes out of a salary, country by country
Take-home pay is what reaches your bank account after your employer has withheld income tax and social contributions, and after any pension savings you make from gross pay. What gets withheld depends almost entirely on where you work – which is why a job offer in Dubai and one in Manchester cannot be compared on gross salary alone.
Take-home pay = gross salary − pre-tax pension − income tax − social contributions
| Where you work | Income tax | Social contributions (employee) |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Federal 10–37% after the standard deduction, plus state tax in most states | Social Security 6.2% to $184,500; Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% on high pay) |
| United Kingdom | 20%, 40%, 45% above the £12,570 allowance (Scotland: six bands, 19–48%) | National Insurance 8%, then 2% above £50,270 |
| Canada | Federal 14–33% minus credits, plus provincial tax | CPP 5.95% + CPP2 4%; EI 1.63% |
| UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman – expat | None | None |
| Bahrain – expat | None | 1% unemployment insurance |
| Gulf national | None | Pension/social insurance, e.g. Bahrain 8%; Saudi GOSI 9.75%, or 10.75% if first registered from 3 July 2024 (on basic + housing) |
For the 157 other countries the calculator applies each country’s national income-tax bands and employee social contributions for a single employee, and lists the official sources under the result.
Worked examples
United States: $75,000, single, Texas
Taxable income is $75,000 − $16,100 standard deduction = $58,900. Federal tax: 10% of $12,400 ($1,240) + 12% of $38,000 ($4,560) + 22% of $8,500 ($1,870) = $7,670. Social Security takes $4,650 and Medicare $1,087.50. Texas has no income tax, so take-home pay is $61,592.50 – $5,132.71 a month, or 82.1% of gross. The same salary in California with a 5% effective state rate leaves $57,842.50.
A married couple filing jointly on $150,000 in Illinois who put 6% into a 401(k) pay $13,360 federal tax on $108,800 taxable income, $11,475 Social Security and Medicare, and $6,689.93 Illinois tax (4.95% after the $5,850 exemption; the 401(k) is not taxed by Illinois). They keep $109,475.08 and have $9,000 saved for retirement.
United Kingdom: the £100,000 trap
On £100,000 in England take-home pay is £68,557.40. On £110,000 it is £72,357.40: the extra £10,000 is cut by 40% income tax, a further 20% because £5,000 of personal allowance is withdrawn, and 2% National Insurance – 62% in all. Sacrificing 10% of the £110,000 into a pension brings taxable pay back to £99,000, restores the full allowance and leaves £67,977.40: £11,000 goes into the pension for £4,380 less in your pocket.
The Gulf: gross is (almost) net
An expat on AED 180,000 in Dubai keeps all of it – AED 15,000 a month. In Bahrain an expat on BHD 12,000 pays 1% unemployment insurance (BHD 120) and keeps BHD 11,880; on BHD 60,000 the 1% stops at the BHD 4,000-a-month ceiling, so the deduction is BHD 480, not BHD 600. A Bahraini on BHD 30,000 pays 7% pension and 1% unemployment insurance – BHD 2,400 – and takes home BHD 27,600.
How the same salary fares
| Scenario | Gross | Take-home | Deducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expat, UAE | AED 180,000 | AED 180,000 | 0% |
| Expat, Bahrain | BHD 12,000 | BHD 11,880 | 1.0% |
| Bahraini national | BHD 30,000 | BHD 27,600 | 8.0% |
| Single, Texas | $75,000 | $61,592.50 | 17.9% |
| Canada, federal part only | C$75,000 | C$61,371.88 | 18.2% + provincial |
| England | £50,000 | £39,519.60 | 21.0% |
| Scotland | £50,000 | £38,023.55 | 24.0% |
| England | £110,000 | £72,357.40 | 34.2% |
Rules that change the amount
- Caps on contributions. US Social Security stops at $184,500 of pay in 2026 ($192,300 in 2027), UK National Insurance drops to 2% above £50,270, Canadian CPP stops at C$85,000 and EI at C$68,900, and Bahrain’s SIO at BHD 4,000 a month – so higher earners lose a smaller share to contributions.
- Filing status and state. Married filing jointly doubles the US standard deduction and widens the brackets. States with progressive tax need your effective rate; Texas, Florida, Nevada, Washington and the other no-tax states are applied automatically.
- Pension savings. 401(k), RRSP and UK salary sacrifice reduce taxable pay. From April 2029 UK salary sacrifice will save National Insurance only on the first £2,000 a year (Budget, 26 November 2025).
- The wage GOSI counts. Saudi social insurance is charged on basic salary plus housing allowance, capped at SAR 45,000 a month, not on transport or other allowances. If you enter your full package, enter a correspondingly lower rate, or use our GOSI calculator.
- Not modelled. US local and city taxes, the 2025–2028 deductions for tips and overtime (claimed on the tax return), tax credits for children, student-loan repayments and bonuses taxed at different withholding rates.
Common mistakes
- Comparing gross offers across countries: AED 180,000 tax-free and £50,000 in London are not one-to-one – compare take-home pay, then housing and school costs.
- Reading the marginal rate as your average: the Texas earner’s top federal rate is 22%, but federal tax is 10.2% of gross.
- Leaving the state rate empty in a progressive-tax state – the result then shows no state tax at all.
- Assuming Gulf payslips have no deductions: Bahrain withholds 1% from expats, and nationals everywhere pay social insurance.
- Dividing an annual figure that includes a one-off bonus by 12 and treating it as monthly pay.
When to get help
For an exact US paycheck, check your Form W-4 with the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator; in the UK, check your tax code in your HMRC account if your payslip doesn’t match. Talk to a tax adviser if you have two jobs, self-employment income, a move between countries during the year, or US citizenship while working abroad – the foreign earned income exclusion ($132,900 for 2026) and Oman’s 2028 income tax both depend on residence tests this calculator does not apply.

Frequently asked questions
How much is $75,000 a year after tax in 2026?
For a single filer in a state with no income tax, such as Texas or Florida, $61,592.50 a year or $5,132.71 a month: $7,670 federal income tax on $58,900 taxable income, plus $4,650 Social Security and $1,087.50 Medicare. In a state with a 5% effective rate it drops to $57,842.50.
How much is £50,000 after tax in the UK?
In England, Wales or Northern Ireland, £39,519.60 for 2026/27 (£3,293.30 a month): £7,486 income tax and £2,994.40 National Insurance. In Scotland the same salary leaves £38,023.55, because Scottish income tax takes £8,982.05.
Do expats pay tax on their salary in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar?
No. None of the six Gulf states taxes employment income in 2026, so AED 180,000 in the UAE is AED 15,000 a month in hand. The one payroll deduction for expats is in Bahrain: 1% unemployment insurance, so BHD 12,000 leaves BHD 11,880. Oman will tax individual income above OMR 42,000 a year at 5% from 1 January 2028.
What do Gulf nationals pay from their salary?
Social insurance instead of tax. A Bahraini pays 7% pension plus 1% unemployment insurance on wages up to BHD 4,000 a month, so BHD 30,000 leaves BHD 27,600. A Saudi registered with GOSI from 3 July 2024 pays 10.75% from 1 July 2026, but only on basic salary plus housing allowance – enter the rate as a share of the salary you type in.
Why does take-home pay barely rise between £100,000 and £125,140?
The personal allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 above £100,000, so each extra pound costs 40% tax plus 20% on the lost allowance and 2% National Insurance – 62%. A raise from £100,000 to £110,000 adds only £3,800 to take-home pay (£68,557.40 to £72,357.40).
Do pension or 401(k) contributions reduce my take-home pay?
By less than you save. On £110,000, a 10% salary-sacrifice pension puts £11,000 into the pension but cuts take-home pay by only £4,380, because it also restores the personal allowance. A married couple on $150,000 in Illinois putting 6% ($9,000) into a 401(k) keeps $109,475.08.
Is Canadian provincial tax included?
Federal tax, CPP, CPP2 and EI are calculated exactly; provincial tax is added from the effective rate you enter. On C$75,000 the federal part leaves C$61,371.88: C$8,258.60 federal tax, C$4,246.45 CPP and C$1,123.07 EI, which is the 2026 maximum.
I am a US citizen working in the Gulf – do I still pay US tax?
You still file a US return, because the US taxes citizens wherever they live, but the foreign earned income exclusion removes up to $132,900 of foreign salary from tax for 2026 if you qualify. This calculator models US tax for work in the US; Gulf salaries themselves have no local income tax.
