Worked example

A Plan 2 graduate earning £35,000 is £5,615 over the threshold. 9% of that is £505.35 a year, or £42.11 a month. With a £45,000 balance and 3% pay rises, interest outpaces repayments for years and the remaining balance is written off after 30 years.

Frequently asked questions

What are the student loan thresholds for 2026/27?

Plan 1: £26,900 · Plan 2: £29,385 · Plan 4 (Scotland): £33,795 · Plan 5: £25,000 · Postgraduate Loan: £21,000. You repay 9% of income above the threshold (6% for the Postgraduate Loan).

What interest is charged?

Plans 1, 4 and 5 currently charge 4.1%. Plan 2 charges 4.1% if you earn up to £29,385, rising on a sliding scale to the 6% cap at £52,885 or more. The Postgraduate Loan charges 6%.

When is a student loan written off?

Plan 1 (loans since 2006): 25 years after you were first due to repay. Plan 2 and Postgraduate: 30 years. Plan 4: 30 years (or age 65 for older loans). Plan 5: 40 years.

Do I pay both a Postgraduate Loan and an undergraduate plan?

Yes. Postgraduate repayments (6% above £21,000) are taken in addition to your undergraduate plan’s 9%. Run the calculator once for each loan and add them together.

Should I overpay my student loan?

Only if you are likely to clear it before the write-off date. Many Plan 2 and Plan 5 borrowers never repay in full, so extra payments simply reduce what is written off. The year-by-year projection shows which case you are in.
