📏 Pythagorean Theorem Calc

Find the hypotenuse or a missing leg of a right triangle using a² + b² = c², with angles, area and step-by-step working.

Quick answer: The hypotenuse is c = √(a² + b²). For a right triangle with legs 3 and 4, c = √(9 + 16) = √25 = 5.

Step by step

  1. Pythagorean theorem: c = √(a² + b²)
  2. Square the legs: 3² = 9, 4² = 16
  3. Add: 9 + 16 = 25
  4. Square root: c = √25 = 5

The theorem

For a right triangle with legs a and b and hypotenuse c (always the longest side, opposite the right angle):

a² + b² = c²  ·  c = √(a² + b²)  ·  b = √(c² − a²)

Finding the hypotenuse

Example: legs of 3 and 4. Square them: 9 and 16. Add: 25. Take the square root: c = 5. This 3-4-5 triangle is the most famous Pythagorean triple and has been used by builders for thousands of years to lay out square corners.

Finding a leg

Example: a 10 ft ladder leans against a wall with its foot 6 ft from the wall. How high does it reach? b = √(10² − 6²) = √(100 − 36) = √64 = 8 ft.

Beyond the missing side

Once all three sides are known the calculator also reports the area (½ × a × b, since the legs are perpendicular), the perimeter and the two acute angles, found with the inverse tangent: angle opposite a = tan⁻¹(a ÷ b). The two acute angles always add up to 90°.

Tips

  • Use the same unit for every side – the answer comes out in that unit.
  • The hypotenuse must be longer than either leg; if it isn’t, the numbers can’t form a right triangle.
  • To check whether a triangle is right-angled, test whether the two shorter sides squared add up to the longest side squared.
  • The distance between two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) is the same idea: √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pythagorean theorem?

In any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides: a² + b² = c². It only applies to triangles with a 90° angle.

How do I find a missing leg instead of the hypotenuse?

Rearrange the formula to b = √(c² − a²). With a hypotenuse of 13 and a leg of 5, the other leg is √(169 − 25) = √144 = 12. Choose “A leg” in the Solve for menu.

What are Pythagorean triples?

Sets of three whole numbers that satisfy a² + b² = c², such as 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17 and 7-24-25. Any multiple of a triple, like 6-8-10, is also a triple.

Why does the answer show a square root like 5√2?

When the result isn’t a whole number the calculator also gives the exact simplified radical. Legs of 5 and 5 give c = √50 = 5√2 ≈ 7.071068.
