How prorated rent works

Prorating splits one month's rent into daily amounts so you pay only for the days you occupy the property. This calculator uses the actual number of days in the month.

Prorated rent = Monthly rent ÷ Days in month × Days occupied

Example: rent is $1,500 and you move in on 11 March. March has 31 days, so the daily rate is $48.39 and you occupy 21 days (11–31 March): $1,500 ÷ 31 × 21 = $1,016.13.

Tips

  • Check which method your lease specifies before paying.
  • Ask whether the move-in or move-out day counts.
  • Deposits and fees are normally not prorated.
  • Get the amount in writing from your landlord.

This is an estimate for information only, not legal advice. Your lease and local law prevail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prorate rent?

Divide the monthly rent by the number of days in that month, then multiply by the days you will live there, counting the move-in day.

Should I use 30 days or the actual days in the month?

Using the actual days in the month is the most common and exact method. Some landlords use a flat 30-day month or a 365-day year, so check your lease.

Is the move-in day counted?

Normally yes: if you move in on the 11th you pay from the 11th to the end of the month. For move-out, the last day is usually counted as well.

Is prorated rent legally required?

It depends on your country, state and lease. Your lease or local tenancy rules decide it, so confirm with your landlord or agent.
