📝 Final Grade Calculator
Find out what you need to score on your final exam to reach the overall grade you want.
Quick answer: Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With 88% now and a final worth 25%, you need (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final to finish with 90%.

The final grade formula
Your overall grade is a weighted average of the work you have already done and the final exam. Rearranging that average gives the score you need:
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w (w = final weight as a decimal)
Worked example
You have 88% going into the final, the final is worth 25% of the course, and you want a 90% overall.
- Your current work counts for 75%: 88 × 0.75 = 66 points already banked.
- You need 90 − 66 = 24 more points from the final.
- The final is worth 25%, so you need 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96% on it.
If you only needed a B (80%), the same calculation gives (80 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 56%.
Common letter grade cut-offs
| Letter | Minimum percent |
|---|---|
| A | 90% |
| B | 80% |
| C | 70% |
| D | 60% |
| F | below 60% |
The calculator’s table shows the final score you need for each of these cut-offs at once, so you can see your realistic options.
Tips
- Use your current grade as a percentage of work graded so far – most online grade books show this.
- If unfinished homework or projects still count, your “current grade” will change; recalculate once they are marked.
- Run the numbers early in the term so you know how much the final can really move your grade.
- Check your syllabus for rounding rules – an 89.5% is sometimes rounded up to an A−.
- A score you need above 100% means the target is out of reach; one at or below 0% means it is already secured.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Subtract the part of the grade you have already earned (current grade × the share not covered by the final) from your target, then divide by the final’s weight. The calculator shows each step.
What if the result is over 100%?
Then the target can’t be reached with the final alone unless extra credit is available. Lower your target or check whether other assignments are still outstanding.
What does “final exam weight” mean?
It is the percentage of your overall course grade that the final exam counts for, as listed in your syllabus. If the final is worth 30%, everything else together is worth 70%.
How much will my final change my grade?
Your overall grade will land between the “score 0%” and “score 100%” values shown. A heavily weighted final can move your grade a lot; a 10% final can shift it by at most 10 points.
